Yeah, I know...look, Mr. C's been busy trying to keep up with baseball, and I've been busy trying to keep the bills paid. Deal with it.
POD BOWL 2011
Now that I've long-ago given up on ALF Cup competition, since ALF is clearly my undisputed all-time TV ratings champ, and now that radio is officially dead and buried and decomposed, and now that I have two jobs during which I can listen to the dozens of podcasts I subscribe to, it's time to begin a new tradition.
Starting this month, and repeating every August for the foreseeable future, I will be conducting an annual podcast tournament to determine a yearly "Pod Almighty", if you will. Each year, 32 podcasts will qualify for a 5-week bracket tournament starting 5 weeks before Labor Day.
This year, podcast episodes dated August 1-7 have been saved up and are squaring off during the week of August 8-14, while podcasts dated that week will compete the following week, and so on, until the final which will be held on Labor Day.
The bracket was filled out using a system which, frankly, I won't bore you with. Here are the first-round matchups, from top-to-bottom:
2011 POD BOWL--FIRST ROUND
Jordan Jesse Go vs The Rachel Maddow Show
Hypothetical Help vs This Week With Larry Miller
Fitzdog Radio vs Distorted View Daily
SnydeRemarksRadio vs The Twin Peaks Podcast
Never Not Funny vs Countdown With Keith Olbermann
The Joe Rogan Experience vs How Did This Get Made
Comedy Bang Bang vs The Apple Sisters
Comedy Film Nerds vs Mike And Tom Eat Snacks
Paul And Storm vs Todd N Tyler
The Gentlemen's Club vs Doug Loves Movies
StarTalk vs Affirmation Nation
The Bugle vs WTF With Marc Maron
Breaking Bad Insider vs STFU Show
The Nerdist vs The Smartest Man In The World
Legacy Of Laughs vs CBC Radio 3 Track Of The Day
Risk vs Ardent Atheist
Analysis:
Expect Maddow to beat JJ Go, and Miller to get a virtual bye vs the absent Hypo Help. DV Daily should have no problem with Fitzdog, and SnydeRemarks might also get a virtual bye vs absent Twin Peaks (a shame since they were coming up on the reveal ep!)
KO should KO NNF, and Rogan vs HDTGM is almost a tossup, but expect Rogan's long runtime to hurt his chances. Then things get tough, with Earwolf stablemates CBB and the Apples going head-to-head (bet on the Sisters unless CBB bags a top-notch guest). And MATES should get by CFN, leading to a potential marquee 2nd-rd match between the Apples and MATES.
In a 2-on-2 match, P&S should bounce TnT. DLM should beat G-Club, and an absent StarTalk will give a bye to Bob Ducca. Look for Bugle to upset WTF, and B-Bad to make STFU, well, STFU.
In what has to be the biggest match of the week, I see Proops over Nerdist in what might be a close one. CBC3 Track Du Jour should knock out LOL, and finally, AA should not be at risk vs Risk.
Now, you might have noticed a glaring omission. Where, you may ask, is Steve Dahl? Well, Dahl was of course the odds-on favorite during the tourney's early planning stages. But it was decided right off the bat that this tournament would be open to FREE PODCASTS ONLY, and unfortunately shortly thereafter Dahl priced himself right out of the whole dance.
Not only that, but in a move similar to your typical beauty pageant, it has also been decided that it will be the duty of the winning podcast to remain free of charge for the following year to retain the title. If the winning podcast is unable to fulfill its duty, the runner-up will assume the title.
And with that, let the carnage begin!
