POD BOWL 0 CHAMPION:
Ardent Atheist With Emery Emery

Now, from the top...

Okay, so the final match of Pod Bowl 2011 just ended, but I'm going to consider it a trial run. Let's just call it "Pod Bowl 0".

The main bug of the format was that some of the favorites failed to post a weekly episode, so they got bounced. The best fix I can come up with is to make each round a best-of-3. So today we begin collecting episodes dated Sep 5-11 for the first third of the first round. The field will again be 32, and the whole tournament will take place over the next 15 weeks. (Why do I do this to myself?)

Yeah, I know...look, Mr. C's been busy trying to keep up with baseball, and I've been busy trying to keep the bills paid. Deal with it.

POD BOWL 2011

Now that I've long-ago given up on ALF Cup competition, since ALF is clearly my undisputed all-time TV ratings champ, and now that radio is officially dead and buried and decomposed, and now that I have two jobs during which I can listen to the dozens of podcasts I subscribe to, it's time to begin a new tradition.

Starting this month, and repeating every August for the foreseeable future, I will be conducting an annual podcast tournament to determine a yearly "Pod Almighty", if you will. Each year, 32 podcasts will qualify for a 5-week bracket tournament starting 5 weeks before Labor Day.

This year, podcast episodes dated August 1-7 have been saved up and are squaring off during the week of August 8-14, while podcasts dated that week will compete the following week, and so on, until the final which will be held on Labor Day.

The bracket was filled out using a system which, frankly, I won't bore you with. Here are the first-round matchups, from top-to-bottom:

2011 POD BOWL--FIRST ROUND
Jordan Jesse Go vs The Rachel Maddow Show
Hypothetical Help vs This Week With Larry Miller
Fitzdog Radio vs Distorted View Daily
SnydeRemarksRadio vs The Twin Peaks Podcast
Never Not Funny vs Countdown With Keith Olbermann
The Joe Rogan Experience vs How Did This Get Made
Comedy Bang Bang vs The Apple Sisters
Comedy Film Nerds vs Mike And Tom Eat Snacks
Paul And Storm vs Todd N Tyler
The Gentlemen's Club vs Doug Loves Movies
StarTalk vs Affirmation Nation
The Bugle vs WTF With Marc Maron
Breaking Bad Insider vs STFU Show
The Nerdist vs The Smartest Man In The World
Legacy Of Laughs vs CBC Radio 3 Track Of The Day
Risk vs Ardent Atheist

Analysis:
Expect Maddow to beat JJ Go, and Miller to get a virtual bye vs the absent Hypo Help. DV Daily should have no problem with Fitzdog, and SnydeRemarks might also get a virtual bye vs absent Twin Peaks (a shame since they were coming up on the reveal ep!)

KO should KO NNF, and Rogan vs HDTGM is almost a tossup, but expect Rogan's long runtime to hurt his chances. Then things get tough, with Earwolf stablemates CBB and the Apples going head-to-head (bet on the Sisters unless CBB bags a top-notch guest). And MATES should get by CFN, leading to a potential marquee 2nd-rd match between the Apples and MATES.

In a 2-on-2 match, P&S should bounce TnT. DLM should beat G-Club, and an absent StarTalk will give a bye to Bob Ducca. Look for Bugle to upset WTF, and B-Bad to make STFU, well, STFU.

In what has to be the biggest match of the week, I see Proops over Nerdist in what might be a close one. CBC3 Track Du Jour should knock out LOL, and finally, AA should not be at risk vs Risk.

Now, you might have noticed a glaring omission. Where, you may ask, is Steve Dahl? Well, Dahl was of course the odds-on favorite during the tourney's early planning stages. But it was decided right off the bat that this tournament would be open to FREE PODCASTS ONLY, and unfortunately shortly thereafter Dahl priced himself right out of the whole dance.

Not only that, but in a move similar to your typical beauty pageant, it has also been decided that it will be the duty of the winning podcast to remain free of charge for the following year to retain the title. If the winning podcast is unable to fulfill its duty, the runner-up will assume the title.

And with that, let the carnage begin!

MR. COLOREDWELL'S SPORTS FASHION REPORT

Okay, first let's get caught up with my March notes, of which there were only 2, and both Toronto-based...

Finally got a look at the Maple Leafs in March, and as expected they are fabulous. And the Raptors wore green the day before St Patty's. But they still had that half-belt crap like the Mavs. What a waste.

And then just this afternoon...Ick. The Celtics in green with black trim, including spooge. Ick. It's so bad I had to give a win to Miami. And I hate Miami!

***

Yes, the rumours are true, I've been taking notes on Major League Baseball unis. What am I, goofy?! To be fair, most of the baseball teams are actually dressing quite well. Lots of block numbers and not a speck of spooge. Here's my notes so far...

The Cleveland Indians have some very good throwbacks this year. Creamy goodness!

The Milwaukee Brewers were in throwbacks April 8. How great is their old mitt logo? A classic! So, of course, they ditched

it for their current shitty look.

The Atlanta Braves have a very nice red jersey for Sunday games.

***

Now, a quick review of college basketball unis during March Madness...

Top 9 best-dressed, in alphabetical order:
CLEMSON: Orange with purple trim, lovely colors.
DUKE: No mistakes in white. (Didn't see them in blue.)
GEORGETOWN: The light is grey, follow the path.
MCNEESE STATE: Yellow with blue trim, very cute.
MOREHEAD STATE: Looking good in blue, but they'd make the list on the name alone!
NORTH CAROLINA: Didn't get to see their light blue uni, but it still looks good as trim on white.
OHIO STATE: The light is grey, follow the path.
PURDUE: In gold, priceless.
UCLA: Either in blue or white, with gold trim, Bruins look just as awesome as in football.
All the above had block numbers and no spooge. We have a 3-way tie for 10th with a few problems:
BUTLER: In white their one flaw emerged, a bit of blue spooge on the shorts, which I then noticed was just barely detectable on their black uni.
RICHMOND: The Spideys looked good in blue or white, but in red they had spooge.
WASHINGTON STATE: The light is grey, follow the path. But lose the occasional "COUGS" on the front. It's just dumb.

As for the worst-dressed, ugly number fonts and spooge were rampant, so there were plenty of candidates to choose from. But the one uni that drooped far below the rest was the disgusting droopy-drawers look of...
WOFFORD
The rest of the 20 worst-dressed, in alphabetical order:

MR. COLOREDWELL'S MARCH MADNESS FINAL FOUR FASHION REPORT

Let's get these off my plate while I work on a full report which I hope to post Sunday...

NIT FINAL FOUR:

WASHINGTON STATE (grey) VS WICHITA STATE (black)
Both blocks. Wich has spooge. "Cougs" is back...ick. Still, Wash follows the Path.
WINNER: WASHINGTON STATE

COLORADO (grey) VS ALABAMA (red)
Col follows the Path, but with italic blocks and leg crap. Bama looks good in red, no spooge. Non-blocks but they're not

ugly.
WINNER: ALABAMA

NIT FINAL: ALABAMA (white) VS WICHITA STATE (black)
Bama's non-blocks beat Wich's spooge.
WINNER: ALABAMA

NCAA FINAL FOUR:
BUTLER (white) VS VCU (black)
Both blocks. Spooge on Butler? Ick! But VCU's is much worse.
WINNER: BUTLER

CONNECTICUT (white) VS KENTUCKY (blue)
Both have side crap. UConn has a bad font, KY has blocks and nice shade of blue.
WINNER: KENTUCKY

NCAA FINAL: CONNECTICUT (white) VS BUTLER (black)
No surprises here. Knew going in Butler's black and blocks would beat UConn's ugly skinny numbers and leg crap.
WINNER: BUTLER

Out of respect for the late Roger Abbott, Mr. Coloredwell's next report will be posted later this week. Meanwhile, please enjoy the tribute clips below.

MR. COLOREDWELL'S MARCH MADNESS FASHION REPORT

Elite 8...ah, aliteration!

FLORIDA (white) VS BUTLER (black)
Butler: no mistakes. Florida: all mistakes. No contest.
WINNER: BUTLER

CONNECTICUT (white) VS ARIZONA (blue)
No blocks, no spooge. Useless side crap. UConn's numbers are too skinny.
WINNER: ARIZONA

KANSAS (white) VS VCU (black)
Both spooged. At least VCU has blocks.
WINNER: VCU

NORTH CAROLINA (white) VS KENTUCKY (blue)
Both blocks, no spooge. Only real flaw is that rectangle.
WINNER: NORTH CAROLINA

And with that we're down to the Final Four, but before that I'll have my month-ending report covering all sports. All the #1's are gone, and if that's not March Madness I don't know what is. ONE...STEP...BEYOND!!!

MR. COLOREDWELL'S MARCH MADNESS FASHION REPORT

This Sweet 16 has left me bitter. Here it is anyway...

SAN DIEGO STATE (white) VS CONNECTICUT (blue)
SDSU has blocks and a tapered pant stripe, but it's not spooge. UConn has a bad non-block font.
WINNER: SAN DIEGO STATE

FLORIDA (white) VS BYU (blue)
Both badly spooged. BYU's blocks beat Florida's fugly font. Say that 5 times fast!
WINNER: BYU

DUKE (white) VS ARIZONA (blue)
No probs with Duke. Probs with Zona.
WINNER: DUKE

WISCONSIN (white) VS BUTLER (black)
Butler's basic black and blocks whip Wisconsin's wimpy white. I am an aliteration animal!
WINNER: BUTLER

NORTH CAROLINA (white) VS MARQUETTE (yellow)
UNC has blocks and the light blue trim. Marquette has non-blocks and a stupid dashed line down the side, like Temple football but worse.
WINNER: NORTH CAROLINA

KANSAS (white) VS RICHMOND (red)
Both spooged. Spiders win on blocks.
WINNER: RICHMOND

OHIO STATE (white) VS KENTUCKY (blue)
Ouch. OSU lost. Should've worn grey and followed the Path. Anyhoo, both blocks, no spooge. I would give this to KY except for that clunky white rectangle on the shorts.
WINNER: OHIO STATE

FLORIDA STATE (white) VS VCU (black)
Both spooged. VCU wins on blocks.
WINNER: VCU

Next report after the weekend's games.

Thursday, March 24, 2011

MR. COLOREDWELL'S MARCH MADNESS FASHION REPORT

MIAMI FL (white) MISSOURI STATE (maroon)
Miami has the same ugly numbers from football but no spooge. Miz St has blocks but they're black on maroon, and they have black spooge. At least I can read Miami's ugly numbers.
WINNER: MIAMI FL

ALABAMA (white) VS NEW MEXICO (red)
No blocks. Bama is plain but no spooge. NM has Buckeye colors but a bad case of spooge.
WINNER: ALABAMA

WASHINGTON STATE (grey) VS OKLAHOMA STATE (orange)
OSU has a good orange but a bad font. WSU has blocks and Buckeye colors. The uni is grey, follow the Path. Only problem with WSU uni is that it stupidly says "COUGS".
WINNER: WASHINGTON STATE

COLORADO (grey) VS KENT STATE (blue)
Both blocks, Col's are italic. No spooge, but both have side crap. Kent still needs some shiny gold shorts. In a close call...the uni is grey, follow the Path.
WINNER: COLORADO

WICHITA STATE (white) VS CHARLESTON (maroon)
Wichita has shadowed blocks and huge spooge. CoC has blocks and side crap.
WINNER: CHARLESTON

ALABAMA (white) VS MIAMI FL (black)
'Canes in black with their ugly orange numbers. Ick. Gotta go with boring 'Bama.
WINNER: ALABAMA

WASHINGTON STATE (white) VS NORTHWESTERN (purple)
Both blocks and good colors. NU a teensy bit spoogish on the side.
WINNER: WASHINGTON STATE

Next report will cover the Sweet 16, playing Thursday and Friday. See you then, Sweeties!

Sunday, March 20, 2011

MR. COLOREDWELL'S MARCH MADNESS FASHION REPORT

This weekend's games:

BOSTON COLLEGE (white) VS NORTHWESTERN (purple)
BC still with those ugly numbers. NU has blocks and decent colors, so I'll overlook the side crap.
WINNER: NORTHWESTERN

KENTUCKY (white) VS WEST VIRGINIA (black)
Both blocks, no spooge. WV actually looks good (other than dark blue numbers on black, but with the yellow outline, still readable). Go fig. KY's blocks a bit skinny.
WINNER: WEST VIRGINIA

FLORIDA (white) VS UCLA (blue)
No contest. Gators have everything wrong, Bruins have everything right.
WINNER: UCLA

RICHMOND (white) VS MOREHEAD STATE (blue)
Both very well-dressed. Edge to Morehead on colors (and of course the name).
WINNER: MOREHEAD STATE

SAN DIEGO STATE (white) VS TEMPLE (black)
Both looking clunky in this game. SDSU on blocks.
WINNER: SAN DIEGO STATE

PITTSBURGH (white) VS BUTLER (black)
No spooge, both blocks, although Pitt's are shadowed. The Butler does it with a clean black and white uni. Hey, just like a butler! "Your basket-ball, sir."
WINNER: BUTLER

BYU (white) VS GONZAGA (black)
Both repeat their looks from Thursday. And again, it comes down to "OO-GONZAGA OOGA OOGA OO-GONZAGA OOGA OOGA..."
WINNER: GONZAGA

WISCONSIN (white) VS KANSAS STATE (purple)
No blocks, bad fonts. KSU at least has purple. Badgers have spooge.
WINNER: KANSAS STATE

CONNECTICUT (white) VS CINCINNATI (black)
Both bad fonts. Cincy has their usual sickening spooge.
WINNER: CONNECTICUT

VIRGINIA TECH (white) VS WICHITA STATE (black)
Both blocks, Wichita has spooge.
WINNER: VIRGINIA TECH

NORTH CAROLINA (white) VS WASHINGTON (black)
No contest. UNC, with light blue blocks, has it together. Washington, dark purple numbers on black? In a shitty font? With spooge? An atrocity.
WINNER: NORTH CAROLINA

DUKE (white) VS MICHIGAN (yellow)
Both blocks, no spooge. I hate UM but they actually look nice, good thing they don't wear helmets! But against a solid Duke uni...not a chance.
WINNER: DUKE

OHIO STATE (grey) VS GEORGE MASON (green)
Aw, is that spooge I see on GM? Ruins an otherwise good uni. Doesn't matter, because OSU is sporting their excellent "Geno" wardrobe.
The Buckeyes follow the Path
The Path is the Way
The Way is the Light
The Light is Grey.

WINNER: OHIO STATE

TEXAS (white) VS ARIZONA (blue)
No blocks but no spooge. Almost a toss-up. Slight font edge to Zona.
WINNER: ARIZONA

PURDUE (gold) VS VCU (black)
Both blocks. VCU has good colors but bad spooge. Purdue sets the gold standard!
WINNER: PURDUE

KANSAS (white) VS ILLINOIS (orange)
Ugly fonts. KU has spooge. Illinois has orange.
WINNER: ILLINOIS

NOTRE DAME (white) VS FLORIDA STATE (red)
ND has blocks. Both have spooge, but FSU's is far worse.
WINNER: NOTRE DAME

Next report will cover Monday thru Wednesday's NIT games.

Saturday, March 19, 2011

MR. COLOREDWELL'S MARCH MADNESS FASHION REPORT

It's time for March Madness! ONE...STEP...BEYOND!

WEST VIRGINIA (white) VS CLEMSON (orange)
Both blocks. WV has some really bad Cincy-style spooge. Clem's got the nice orange and purple combo.
WINNER: CLEMSON

LOUISVILLE (white) VS MOREHEAD STATE (blue)
Both blocks. Lou is a tad spoogy. Morehead has pretty colors and no mistakes, plus how can you not LOVE their name?!
WINNER: MOREHEAD STATE

TEMPLE (white) VS PENN STATE (blue)
Owls have non-blocks and some spooge, but at least it's not dashes. PSU has some pretty dumb spooge, but wins on blocks.
WINNER: PENN STATE

KENTUCKY (white) VS PRINCETON (black)
No probs with KY. (I never have probs with KY!) Princeton has black spooge on black.
WINNER: KENTUCKY

VANDERBILT (white) VS RICHMOND (blue)
Vandy has circus numbers. Spiders have a solid uni. My Spidey sense is tingling!
WINNER: RICHMOND

SAN DIEGO STATE (white) VS NORTHERN COLORADO (blue)
Both blocks. SDSU's pant stripe just a tad spoogy.
WINNER: NORTHERN COLORADO

FLORIDA (white) VS UCSB (blue)
Both suck. FL has a hideous font and very bad spooge. SB has an ugly font and squares down the side. Lesser of two eyesores.
WINNER: UCSB

BYU (white) VS WOFFORD (black)
Ick. Both blocks, both bad spooge. But Wofford's spooge may be the worst of all. They have a droopy-drawer look. Who designed them, Philip from Survivor? No, if he did they'd be fuchsia!
WINNER: BYU

CONNECTICUT (white) VS BUCKNELL (orange)
UConn has a bad font. Bucknell has a bad font, bad spooge, and that stupid half-a-belt shit.
WINNER: CONNECTICUT

UCLA (white) VS MICHIGAN STATE (green)
Bruins uni is flawless. MSU has the same stupid numbers as their football team.
WINNER: UCLA

ST JOHN'S (white) VS GONZAGA (black)
St John's has a clumsy logo and non-blocks. Zags have blocks and a weird arrow pointing down the side. I'll admit it, the deciding factor is "OO-GONZAGA OOGA OOGA OO-GONZAGA OOGA OOGA I CAN'T STOP THIS FEELIN'!..."
WINNER: GONZAGA

CINCINNATI (white) VS MISSOURI (black)
Cincy's uni is virtually identical to their disgusting football uni. Mizzou's is not, which is just good enough.
WINNER: MISSOURI

BTW, just so you don't think I haven't noticed, every basketball team I've seen, college and pro, has worn the same color from neck to knee. Why is that?

TEXAS (white) VS OAKLAND (black)
No blocks. Oak has a bit of spooge.
WINNER: TEXAS

NOTRE DAME (white) VS AKRON (blue)
Both have spooge, Akron's is worse. ND has blocks.
WINNER: NOTRE DAME

GEORGE MASON (white) VS VILLANOVA (blue)
Both side stripes are just a tad spoogy. GM has blocks.
WINNER: GEORGE MASON

ARIZONA (white) VS MEMPHIS (blue)
No blocks, no spooge. Memphis has a pretty blue.
WINNER: MEMPHIS

TEXAS A&M (white) VS FLORIDA STATE (red)
A&M has skinny blocks. FSU has a serious spooge overdose.
WINNER: TEXAS A&M

OHIO STATE (white) VS TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO (blue)
A foregone conclusion.
WINNER: OHIO STATE

KANSAS (white) VS BOSTON U (red)
Both spooged. KU has the same goofy numbers as in football. BU has blocks and a nice red.
WINNER: BOSTON U

NORTH CAROLINA (white) VS LONG ISLAND (black)
Both blocks, no spooge. LI has a solid look, but it's hard to resist that pretty light blue NC trim.
WINNER: NORTH CAROLINA

PURDUE (white) VS ST PETER'S (black)
Both blocks, no spooge. St Pete has a dumb white pyramid at the knee.
WINNER: PURDUE

UNLV (white) VS ILLINOIS (orange)
No spooge. Ugly fonts on both. Edge to orange.
WINNER: ILLINOIS

WASHINGTON (white) VS GEORGIA (red)
UGA has a weird font but no spooge. Washington's font is ugly and they have spooge.
WINNER: GEORGIA

GEORGETOWN (grey) VS VCU (black)
Both blocks. VCU has spooge. G'town's uni is a classic. The light is grey. Follow the path.
WINNER: GEORGETOWN

And one NIT game to finish us off...

CALIFORNIA (blue) VS COLORADO (grey)
Cal still no blocks and spooge. Col has blocks but they're the same screwy ones from football, and they have some useless crap down their sides but it's not spooge. I'll give them credit for following the path and drafting behind G'town.
WINNER: COLORADO

Next report will cover the weekend's games.

Thursday, March 17, 2011

MR. COLOREDWELL'S MARCH MADNESS FASHION REPORT
Okay, this is how it works...I'm including the NIT, because it's in HD, and I'm NOT including NCAA games on TruTV, because it's not in HD. Simple as that.

Here's the results from Tuesday and Wednesday:

DAYTON (black) VS COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON (gold)
Dayton has red and blue trim including pant stripes which look purple at times. Nice effect. CoC has a nice light shade of gold, but with dashed spooge on the pants.
WINNER: DAYTON

ALABAMA (white) VS COASTAL CAROLINA (black)
'Bama in boring white, but better than Coastal in black and teal, ugh. Plus an impossible nickname. What is it, the Chandeliers?
WINNER: ALABAMA

OKLAHOMA STATE (orange) VS HARVARD (black)
Harvard is rather generic. I would go OSU on color, but their number font ruins it.
WINNER: HARVARD

NEW MEXICO (white) VS UTEP (blue)
Both spooged. NM's numbers are too small. UTEP at least has blocks.
WINNER: UTEP

BOSTON COLLEGE (white) VS MCNEESE STATE (yellow)
McNeese in a pretty yellow with blocks. BC has the same hideous number font as their football team.
WINNER: MCNEESE STATE

ST MARY'S (white) VS KENT STATE (blue)
Kent could use some shiny pants! St Mary's is all wrong. A putrid font, plus spooge.
WINNER: KENT STATE

WICHITA STATE (white) VS NEBRASKA (red)
Both have blocks and spooge. Wichita's spooge is a bit worse.
WINNER: NEBRASKA

VIRGINIA TECH (white) VS BETHUNE-COOKMAN (black)
Hokies a bit ho-hum. BC has shiny gold trim, but overall look is kind of clunky. VT has blocks.
WINNER: VIRGINIA TECH

CALIFORNIA (yellow) VS MISSISSIPPI (red)
Ole Miss has nice color combo and looks great close up, tho the blue blocks (on red) are hard to read in wideshot. Cal has non-blocks and spooge.
WINNER: MISSISSIPPI

WASHINGTON STATE (white) VS LONG BEACH STATE (navy)
Both have blocks. No mistakes on WSU. LBS loses on spooge.
WINNER: WASHINGTON STATE

Next report in about 48 hours, give or take a few, covering Thursday and Friday games.

Monday, February 28, 2011

MR. COLOREDWELL'S SPORTS FASHION REPORT

So I decided to do one report for the whole month of February, because I don't have that many notes this deep into the NBA/NHL seasons (and we won't even discuss what happened on the 6th). Besides, it's a short month, and any thought I had of making these things monthly was immediately erased by the impending March Madness. I cannot wait to delve into that. Anyhoo here's my few notes for the past month...

The New Orleans Hornets logo is a stroke of genius.

The Calgary Flames wore throwbacks in a home outdoor game, and they were quite stylish, albeit a bit Ronald McDonald-esque.

The NBA All-Star Game uniforms were fantastic! All other all-star game unis answer to these! Nice use of two-tones, shiny metallic trim, wonderful!

The Penguins in light blue? They look very good, but they don't make any sense. I have yet to see any actual penguins that color. Do they exist?

And I write this just after checking out a Red Wings telecast. I swear, every time they say the name Datsyuk it sounds to me like Duxoop. But the highlight just now was seeing a commercial, on Fox Sports Detroit, for The Goal Light! (You can do yourself and Steve Dahl a favor and get one at TheGoalLight.com)

And yes, I'm still working on the final college football uniform rankings (I suspect I'll post that right before Duxoop posts his rewrite of his recent misunderstood Facebook post). Bear with me.

MR. COLOREDWELL'S SPORTS FASHION REPORT

Okay, in light of Sunday's events, we're just going to ignore football for now. My final 2010 football uniform rankings will be posted once I can bring myself to deal with it all. This I can tell you, the W-L standings have been adjusted (AS IS MY WONT!) to reflect my newfound hatred of a certain snot-and-piss colored team. Can you say 0-20?

Anyhoo, we finally got an official look at the Indiana Pacers and Ottawa Senators in HD. (Maple Leafs, where are you?) The Pacers don't look as bad as they used to, but the Bulls beat them with block numbers. The Senators have nice colors, but non-block numbers and spooge were no match for the Red Wings. And the NHL All-Star Game unis had some nice two-tone color combos, but really bad numbers.

That's all for now, hopefully I will post again very soon, as events warrant. Until then, I need yet another good cry. And maybe some chocolates.

PS: The only, ONLY, good thing about last night was ALF's cameo appearance in that NFL Fans spot. Even though they had him wearing the wrong team. Panthers? Puh-leeze! Still, that shade of blue looks fabulous on him. Love you ALFer! XOXOXO

[Duxoop's note: And another thing, ALF's show ran from 1986 to 1990, and the Carolina Panthers began play in 1995. Hello?!]

WHAT MAKES FOOTBALL GREAT? SOCIALISM!

(Transcribed from Real Time With Bill Maher, 1/28/2011)

With the Super Bowl less than a week away, Americans must realize what makes NFL football so great: socialism. That's right, the NFL takes money from the rich teams and gives it to the poorer ones, just like President Obama wants to do with his secret army of Acorn volunteers.

Green Bay, Wisconsin has a population of 100,000, yet this sleepy little town on the banks of the Fuck-If-I-Know River has just as much of a chance of making it to the Super Bowl as the New York Jets, who, next year, need to just shut the fuck up and play.

Now, me personally, I haven't watched the Super Bowl since 2004, when Janet Jackson's nipple popped out during halftime and that split-second glimpse of an unrestrained black titty burned my eyes and "offended me as a Christian." But I get it; who doesn't love the spectacle of juiced-up millionaires giving each other brain damage on a giant flat-screen TV? So it's no surprise that some 100 million Americans will watch the Super Bowl this Sunday. That's 40 million more than go to church on Christmas. Suck on that, Jesus!

It's also 85 million more than watched the last game of the World Series, and in that is an economic lesson for America. Because football is built on an economic model of fairness and opportunity, and baseball is built on a model where the rich always win, and the poor usually have no chance. The World Series is like the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills: you have to be a rich bitch just to play. Whereas the Super Bowl is like Tila Tequila: anyone can get in.

Or, to put it another way, football is more like the Democratic philosophy. Democrats don't want to eliminate capitalism or competition, but they would like it if some kids didn't have to go to a crummy school in a rotten neighborhood while others get to go to a great school and their dad gets them into Harvard. Because when that happens, achieving the American Dream is easy for some and just a fantasy for others.

That's why the NFL, literally, shares the wealth. TV is their biggest source of revenue, and they put it all in a big Commie pot and split it 32 ways. Because they don't want anyone to fall too far behind. That's why the team that wins the Super Bowl picks last in the next draft. Or what the Republicans would call "punishing success."

Baseball, on the other hand, is exactly like the Republicans, and I don't just mean it's incredibly boring. I mean their economic theory is "Every man for himself." The small-market Pittsburgh Steelers go to the Super Bowl more than anybody, but the Pittsburgh Pirates? Levi Johnston has sperm that will not grow up and live long enough to see the Pirates in a World Series!

The Pirates' payroll is $40 million; the Yankees' is $206 million. The Pirates have about as much chance of getting to the playoffs as a poor black teenager from Newark has of becoming the CEO of Halliburton. That's why people stop going to Pirates games in May, because if you're not in the game, you become indifferent to the fate of the game, and maybe even get bitter.

That's what's happening to the middle class in America. It's also how Marie Antoinette lost her head.

So you kind of have to laugh that the same angry white males who hate Obama because he's redistributing wealth just love football, a sport that succeeds because it does just that. To them, the NFL is as American as hot dogs, Chevrolet, apple pie, and a second giant helping of apple pie.

But then again, they think they're macho because their sport is football. When, honestly, is there anything gayer than wearing another man's shirt?

MR. COLOREDWELL'S SPORTS FASHION REPORT

Another slow week in sports fashion reporting. Sunday afternoon I was checking out the Packers and the Bears. Then I left Bretz, went home and watched the Green Bay-Chicago game.

Anyhoo, no surprises in unis this week. With football season winding down, I probably should cut down on my reports. Tell you what, my next report will be right after the Super Bowl. Then I plan to have my final rankings for college and pro football.

The good: 76ers in old school red, stylin' like Dr. J back in the day!

The bad: Saints, see what you get for wearing those black pants? You got outplayed AND outdressed. By Seattle!

The ugly: The Oregon Ducks latest abortion. Ugh. No comment.

And the just plain HUH???: The Celtics with black trim. Eeww.

SPOCK'S BRAIN WOULD ESPLODE

The delightfully logic-defying part of this year's Duxoop Dozen is that since 1) 1983 Rookie winners Eggs Danny Thomas Style is actually the fictional band I created that's really just me (sort of like how NIN is pretty much Trent Reznor), 2) I was a member of 2000 Rookie winners The (Convergys) Zoo, and 3) & 4) I am a member of 2003 Rookie winners the NWOPC as well as 2010 Rookie winners the Ohio/Michigan Atheists, I have now won my own Rookie Of The Year award, which is given to people or things new to me, 4 times.

MR. COLOREDWELL'S WEEKLY SPORTS FASHION REPORT

Back on schedule, thus a short week. In chrono order...

TCU, nice shiny purple pants.

Capitals, nice throwbacks. Penguins, dark blue? Huh? I have yet to see any actual penguins that color. (BTW I agree with Steve Dahl, whenever/wherever there's an outdoor hockey game, the rink should take up as much room as possible.)

Jets, all green? Not good.

Saints, all black? You guys are REALLY pissing me off. Even Tampa's pewter pants look better.

Burgundyskins, be sure to bring back those fabulous yellow pants next season!

Seahawks, what an absolute disgrace. They should not be in the playoffs. It's just wrong. And I'm not talking about their 7-9 record. I'd shoot the person who came up with "Gun Metal Blue"...if anyone could find me an actual gun that color!

Virginia Tech, orange helmets for the Orange Bowl? Clever AND cute!

Minnesota Wild, your home green unis are terrific. Your road white unis are horrific. Why such disparity in style?

MAYBE NEXT YEAR, THEY'LL USE A SUNDIAL!

Made a delivery to Sandusky Friday night, during which I stopped off in Port Clinton just in time to witness the Walleye Drop. (Got there at 11:58!) Remind me not to ever go to that again. My friend Kat and I went 6 years ago, and although the timing of the drop was crap, at least there was a clearly audible countdown. You would think 6 years later they'd improve things. Just the opposite...

This time there was no countdown to be heard, and no ticking clock in sight. Somewhere around 11:59, the walleye began to lurch from near the top of the cable downward. Somewhere around a minute later it reached an unspecified point near the bottom, and a gradual sense that it had gone as far it was going to go slowly, subtly infiltrated the crowd...so instead of a definite '3-2-1-Happy New Year!' moment, there was merely a general feeling that, okay, it's probably past midnight by now...happy new year. I guess. Um...WOOHOO!

Least satisfying ringing in of a new year I've ever experienced. Huge letdown. I wish I had just kept driving, then I would not have felt such total disappointment. (But as Kat pointed out to me, at least I was still getting paid.)

Plus, the thing is hideous...it looks more like a Snakehead!
